I’ve been in the wellness industry for quite some time now, and if there’s one big lesson I’ve learned, it’s this: perfection doesn’t exist when it comes to wellness. Despite all the flawless Instagram feeds and “perfect” routines we see, wellness isn’t about doing everything exactly right all the time.
My Experience with the Myth of the Perfect Routine
In my 20s and 30s, I raced a lot of marathons, trail races, and pushing myself hard with weights. Back then, I was a bit of a perfectionist when it came to my training routine. Every run, every meal, every rest day had to be just right. It was rewarding, but also stressful at times.
Today, I don’t train for performance, at least not right now. I focus more on movement that feels good, seasons that shift my habits, and a wellness routine that fits my life without pressure. And yes, I’m thinking of racing again because, spoiler alert, it’s absolutely possible to compete at 55!
Why I Believe Chasing Perfection Backfires
In my experience, chasing perfection often sets us up for failure. It’s exhausting mentally and physically to constantly try to meet impossible standards. But here’s the thing, I’ve never felt guilt over missing a workout or indulging in a delicious treat. Life is too short not to celebrate it. For me, wellness includes enjoying those moments fully, without shame or regret.
Sometimes, life throws us curveballs like grief, stress, or just plain chaos that shakes our emotional health. During those times, I’ve eaten a little “off plan” or missed workouts, and you know what? That’s absolutely okay. Being kind to yourself and honoring where you are emotionally is just as important as any workout or diet plan.
What matters most is knowing how to get back on track when you’re ready. That’s what makes a routine sustainable, not perfection, but the ability to flow with life’s ups and downs while staying connected to your goals.
How My Wellness Routine Changes With the Seasons
What really helped me embrace imperfection is accepting that my wellness routine is constantly evolving. For example, I naturally crave more outdoor movement in the spring and summer like hiking, walking, cycling, just being outside in the sunshine.
When the colder months arrive, I shift toward indoor workouts and love trying new hobbies that keep me active but also cozy and inspired. This seasonal ebb and flow keeps me motivated and prevents burnout.
Life Is a Journey, Not a Perfect Race
Here’s the truth: I’m still learning what works for me at 55! And honestly, I probably always will be. Life is messy, unpredictable, and sometimes downright hilarious (if you don’t cry first). I’ve learned that it’s not enough to just feel my emotions, I had to learn how to express them too. Saying “I’m struggling” or “I need help” out loud was a game changer. It turns out, holding it all in doesn’t do anyone favors, not even a tough old marathon runner like me.
Wellness is an ongoing journey. Sometimes you sprint, sometimes you jog, and sometimes you just walk while eating chocolate. The key is to keep moving forward in whatever way feels right for you.
What I Do to Embrace Imperfection
Here are a few things I’ve learned to focus on:
Consistency over perfection: Moving my body regularly, even if just for a few minutes, is better than pushing myself too hard and quitting.
Listening to my body and mind: Some days are for movement, some days for rest, and that’s okay.
Celebrating life’s pleasures: I indulge in my favorite foods and moments without guilt because wellness is about balance, not deprivation.
Honoring emotional health: Allowing myself space to heal and express my feelings without judgment.
Bouncing back: After a break or indulgence, I simply reconnect with my healthy habits, no drama needed.
Celebrating small wins: Whether it’s drinking more water or taking a short walk, these victories add up.
Customizing my journey: What works for others might not fit me, and that’s perfectly fine.
Wellness Is a Personal, Imperfect Journey
If there’s one thing I want to share, it’s that wellness is messy, imperfect, and deeply personal. When you stop chasing perfection, you make space for real growth, happiness, and health that lasts.
There’s no “perfect” wellness routine, only the one that fits your life, your rhythms, and your needs.
